About Wareham Cycleworks Ltd

History

Wareham Cycleworks Ltd was formed early in 2017 by the three directors Graham, Paul and Simon. We had all been working for many years for Ross Kempson and Nikki Ryce from Cyclexperience Ltd at the Wareham store and when Ross & Nikki offered us the chance to purchase the business and grow the shop moving forward as a locally based and locally owned store focussed on high quality servicing, repair work and customer service we all jumped at the chance. Unfortunately as part of the seperation from Cyclexperience we will no longer be offering hire from our Wareham Station store as standard (although it is possible to book bikes from them in advance to be delivered to our store as a collection point from Cyclexperience). The bike shop at Wareham Station was originally opened in 2008 as Cyclexperience with Graham as store manager and Paul Hambridge (now owner/director of the awesome Rule 5 bikes) as assistant manager (2008-2012). We were also ably assisted in the early days and couldn't have got open without Simon England's help (now owner/director of equally awesome The London Cycle Workshop). During the next few years we had a few staff members come and go - Alex Harvey was our second mechanic for a couple of years (2012-2014) and Joe Lander was his replacement and our second mechanic (2015-2017) before he emigrated to Australia. Special mentions to our part timers and vacation workers at various times Aaron, Ed, Rob, Sam, Tom & Toby. Simon came onboard as assistant Manager in 2012 and Paul Axon joined us in 2008 as a part timer before taking the plunge in 2015 and joining full time as our head mechanic. When Cyclexperience first opened we were offering cycle hire as well as sales and repairs and had a fleet of 30 or so bikes, but transferred as much as the hire as possible to Norden in 2010 when Ian and Nigel started working down there and we reduced the fleet at the shop to 10 bikes. By 2016 the hire was almost completely seperated from the retail store and plans were put in motion to allow the staff to buy out the retail store and go it alone. We would like to thank all those who have helped us along the path to get us where we are, in paticular Ross & Nikki for believing in us for so long and offering us this opportunity and lastly but most importantly our amazing customers (that's you!) who continue to support us and come back time and again. Thank you all, it wouldn't be possible without you!

Graham Beard

Graham grew up in Bournemouth and has been riding bikes for as long as he can remember and racing them since 1996 (he still has his raceplates and result sheets from his first year of racing the Matchams series - they are in the shop so if you were at those events just ask him and he can dig them out for you). He did most of a mechanical engineering degree at UWE in Bristol before realising that bikes were a much more fun way of making a living. He started working for Cyclexperience in the Brockenhurst hire centre as a vacation job back in the year 2000 before graduating to the Shop in Brockenhurst and going full time in the bike industry around 2004. He left Cyclexperience in 2005 to go and live and work in Lancaster for The Edge Cycleworks and had an ace couple of years riding in the lake district as well as trips to Scotland, Wales and Spain. Having Qualified as a Cyctech Level 2 mechanic in 2006 he left The Edge early in 2007 to do some global travel before returning home to Dorset later that year. As soon as he was back down south he approached Ross at Cyclexperience about opening a hire centre and retail store in the Purbecks and a few months later the Wareham shop was opened and he's been there ever since.
